Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Tastes like actual oranges: Forget the artificial canned stuff that's only "orange" in color. My version is made with freshly squeezed oranges, and trust me: your taste buds can tell. The citrus fragrance is just as incredible.
  • You control every drop of sweetness: You don't need sugar-crash-inducing corn syrup to brew up a sweet summer treat. My orange soda still contains sugar, but my orange soda is naturally sweetened, and unlike the shop-bought kind, you get to control every single drop that goes in.
  • A family favorite to drink and make: If your kids loved my DIY Mountain Dew drink, then my orange soda will quickly become a household favorite too. This recipe is just as fun to make… And since there are only 3 ingredients this time, the process is even easier (and involves less clean up!).
  • You can enjoy my soda all summer long: Oh-so-citrusy, way more refreshing, and "hit the spot" cooling? You're literally drinking summer with every sip. It also pairs perfectly with classic summer staple dishes, like chicken snack wraps or fresh pizza.
  • Perfect for batch making: My recipe yields 20 servings and stays fresh for up to 3 weeks when properly stored. And with a 10-minute prep time? You can effortlessly replenish it whenever you run low. It's also the perfect non-alcoholic drink to serve alongside canapés at parties or other fun gatherings.
  • Takes you back to childhood: Orange soda was (and still is!) my 'go-to' soda as a kid. Anytime I'd go shopping with my mom, we'd stop for a bite at the mall food court, and she'd always treat me to an orange soda with my meal. Now, drinking orange soda takes me back to these heartwarming memories… I'm sure you have a few nostalgic moments of your own like this, too!

What You’ll Need

My orange soda recipe's zesty, refreshing flavor tastes practically miraculous on a hot day, but there's no "magic" at play here. Just whole fresh ingredients that you can find in any store.

  • Medium Oranges: Any oranges you have on hand can work, but if you can squeeze in a quick grocery trip? Look for fresh oranges with thin skin that are slightly soft when pressed. Trust me. These will be the juiciest and give you a thirst-quenching, refreshing citrusy flavor like no other.
  • Granulated Sugar: Granulated sugar is what helps to replicate that satisfying sweetness you get from shop-bought orange soda. While there is still sugar here, it's all natural, and you can easily adjust the amount to your liking. You can substitute granulated sugar with brown sugar, caster sugar, or even powdered sugar (½ the amount). For a more natural alternative, you can use maple syrup or honey (again at ½ the amount).

Minoo's Pro Tip: Using brown sugar will impart an almost caramel, rich undertone to your orange soda. I've found that this deeper flavor complements breakfast cinnamon rolls amazingly. It's also satisfying (and indulgent) enough to be a dessert in itself!

How to Make My Orange Soda Recipe

  1. Step 1: Use a fine grater or microplane to zest the 3 oranges directly into a medium-sized bowl. Take care to only remove the bright orange outer layer and not the white layer or "pith" underneath. The pith will turn the syrup bitter and throw off the sweetness completely.
  1. Step 2: Add 2 cups of granulated sugar to the bowl. Use your fingers to gently rub and massage the zest into the sugar for around 1 to 2 minutes, or until the mixture is damp, fragrant, and orange in colour. This releases the natural oils and gives you a syrup that's vibrant, fresh, and flavorful from the very first sip.

Quick Tip: I've found that kids love getting their hands messy and rubbing the orange into the sugar. So, save yourself some elbow grease and get them involved in the process!

  1. Step 3: Pour in 1 cup of boiling water and stir for 1 to 2 minutes, or until all the sugar has fully dissolved in the bowl. Ensure there are no sugar granules stuck to the sides or left at the bottom of the bowl.
  1. Step 4: Slice the zested oranges in half and then squeeze their juice into the bowl (or use a juicer). Stir to combine the juice with the sugar, and then let the mixture sit covered for 15 to 30 minutes to infuse. The longer it sits, the stronger the flavour will be. Leave to infuse overnight for an even stronger orange flavor.
  1. Step 5: Pour the syrup through a fine-mesh strainer into a clean jar or bottle to separate the liquid from the leftover pulp and zest (solids). Use the back of a spoon to press on these solids to squeeze out as much liquid as you can. Your syrup is now ready. Discard the solids or save for later use; inspo below!
  1. Step 6: To serve (aka the fun part!), add 1 tablespoon of orange soda syrup to a glass filled with ice and top with sparkling water. Stir, then taste test and add more syrup if you prefer your soda a touch sweeter. Enjoy alongside a Banh Mi sandwich for the perfect beat-the-heat combo.

Minoo's Pro Tip: Use cold sparkling water and pour gently to keep every bubble intact. Garnish with a thin orange slice and a sprig of fresh mint for a drink that looks just as incredible as it tastes. Serve with an equally showstopping dish, like my fluffy American pancakes!

Expert Tips

  • Get the motion right: Drag the oranges over the microplane or grater in a slight, back-and-forth rocking motion while applying gentle but firm pressure. Trust me. This is the key behind fine, pith-free zest!
  • Peel instead for ache-free zesting: Zesting oranges is tough on the arms. If it's too much for you, peel the oranges (only the skins) with a paring knife and add the peels to the sugar instead. Just rub for longer and allow the mixture to infuse overnight to get the same punchy orange flavor you'd get from pure zest.
  • Heat the oranges to maximize juice yield: This tip has been passed down through my family, and it still amazes me at how much of a difference it makes! Allow the oranges to hit room temperature before squeezing. This will bring out the juices and increase the yield. If you've refrigerated your oranges, just warm them up in hot water or pop them in the microwave for 10 seconds.
  • Roll the oranges before juicing: Another lil' tip my grandma taught me? Always roll your oranges on the counter while pressing down gently with your palm first. This motion softens the insides and makes them so much easier to juice!
  • Don't throw away the pulp: You can repurpose the leftover pulp by spreading it on a parchment-lined baking sheet and baking it at 425°F for 10 to 15 minutes until crystallized. Use to top baked goods for a stunning finish and satisfying citrus kick, like my easy gingerbread cookies!

Orange Soda Recipe FAQs

Why Does My Orange Soda Taste Bitter?

The likely culprit is accidentally zesting the white pith. Be very careful and make sure to only grate the colored outer layer. I've found that a microplane makes it easy to zest finely and accurately, so if you don't have one on hand, it may be worth the purchase to save you some hassle (and wasted ingredients) later down the line.

Your microplane won't be a one-time-use gadget either. It'll come in handy for other "zesty" recipes, like my homemade Sprite

If you do mess up a batch, you can save it and use it as a citrus flavoring in pastries, pies, cakes, or muffins. You can even use it in orange chicken for some extra tangy oomph.

Does My Orange Soda Taste Like Orange Crush?

My orange soda won't taste as sweet as shop-bought Orange Crush, but it comes pretty close, and in my opinion? It's WAY more refreshing and flavorful since it's packed with actual citrusy goodness.

If you have a sweet tooth and want my orange soda to better replicate the shop-bought stuff, just add more syrup when serving to sweeten things up.

Is Orange Soda Bad for You?

Shop-bought orange sodas are overloaded with sickly sweet corn syrup and other unnecessary additives and artificial flavorings. Next time you visit the grocery store, pick up a branded orange soda and just take a look at the ingredients. It will likely read like a recipe for some witchy potion… and I'm willing to bet that there's no actual orange in there!

My orange soda still isn’t "healthy" by any means. However, it is a much better alternative compared to what you'd find in the store. Mine uses actual oranges, has no artificial additives, and contains less sugar overall. Plus, you can easily tweak the amount of sugar to your liking and even make it sugar-free with sweetener.

Fyi, if you're after a healthy drink that's just as refreshing as it is nourishing, you'll love my ginger shots recipe!

How Long Does My Orange Soda Last?

My orange soda syrup lasts for up to 3 weeks when refrigerated in an airtight bottle or jar. Just give it a quick shake before serving if it's settled, and use a clean spoon every time you scoop out the syrup to keep bacteria at bay.

You can also freeze my orange soda for up to 3 months. Simply pour the syrup into an ice cube tray, and then pop out a cube and add it to a glass of sparkling water whenever you're craving some citrusy refreshment.

Can I Make Orange Soda Without Sugar?

For a sugar-free option, you can substitute the granulated sugar with a plant-based sweetener like monk fruit. You can use an artificial sweetener in a pinch, but I've experimented with this and wouldn't recommend it. I've found that it's a lot harder to get the right balance with artificial sweeteners, and they tend to impart a bitter aftertaste.

If you're mainly looking to cut down on the sugar, just reduce the initial amount of granulated sugar. I've found this works well and really allows that refreshing orange flavor to take center stage. This version also serves as the perfect base for cocktails!

Ingredients

  • 3 medium oranges
  • 2 cups granulated sugar or 1 cup honey or maple syrup
  • 1 cup boiling water

To Serve

  • Sparkling Water
  • Ice

Instructions

  • Zest the oranges into a medium bowl. Only grate the colored outer layer and leave behind the bitter pith.
  • Add 2 cups of granulated sugar to the bowl. Rub the zest into the sugar for 1-2 minutes, or until the mixture is damp and fragrant.
  • Pour the boiling water over the mixture. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  • Slice the zested oranges and squeeze their juice into the bowl. Let the mixture sit uncovered for 15-30 minutes to infuse.
  • Pour the syrup through a fine-mesh strainer into a clean jar or bottle. Your syrup is now ready.
  • To serve, add 1 tablespoon of orange soda syrup into a glass filled with sparkling water and ice. Adjust the amount of syrup as desired.

Notes

  • Don't rush the zesting process: It's so easy to want to rush through this step, especially when you feel those aches creep in, but be patient. Rushing can cause you to overzest and catch the white pith, which will make your drink bitter, and you'll have to start all over again!
  • You're in complete control: Add more syrup when serving for a sweet pick-me-up, or add less for a more subtle (yet still totally satisfying) refreshing flavor.
  • Don't skip the infusing time. The longer you infuse, the more potent the flavor. 15 minutes gives you a light citrus that's perfect for a palate cleanser between meals, but infuse for longer to bring out the orange's sweet-tartness and incredible aroma.
