Ingredients
- 1 Organic Apple
- 2 Tbsp All Purpose Flour
- 1 Tbsp Warm Water
Instructions
- Grate the skin of an organic apple, and add it to a jar (about 2 tbsp). Add in all purpose flour and warm water. Give that all a good mix!
- Close the lid of your jar loosely and place in a warm place for 4 days.
- 4 days later, feed your starter with 2 tbsp flour and 1 tbsp warm water. Mix well and place in a warm place again for 1 day.
- The next day, your sourdough starter should be ready!
Notes
- To check for readiness: Your starter should have bubbles on the top and pass the flour test (place a spoonful of your starter on some water, if it floats it’s ready!)
- Feeding your starter: you can keep just 2 tbsp or less of your starter in the jar at a time, and store in the fridge. When you want to bake, take it out of the fridge, feed with 1 tbsp warm water and 2 tbsp flour and allow to rise to peak!

Have not yet made the starter, but do you have easy recipes for bread or other baked goods?
Do the apples stay or do you need to remove them? Is this able to be used with the same amounts as regular starter?
You can remove them or leave them in, totally up to you! I prefer to remove them. And yes, same amounts as regular starter.
I haven’t made the starter yet but was wondering how to get enough starter to use in a recipe and have a bit left over to feed for the next time. Is there a recipe to use with this starter?
Hi Kim!
Yes you can create a levain, which means that you take a bit out of your soughdough starter and feed that with the amount of flour and water that you need to get enough active starter for your recipe. This would depend on the recipe that your using and how much starter it calls for.
Your other option is to just feed your starter directly. As long as you have even a tsp or two of starter left in your jar you should be able to feed that to make more starter!
